Roger Mayweather, a renowned boxer and trainer who was also the uncle of undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather, passed away at the age of 58.
The former American boxer, who had battled with diabetes, achieved the feat of a two-weight world champion in an illustrious 72-fight career spanning 17 years.
He served as the trainer for his nephew Floyd when he made his professional debut in 1996 for two years until Floyd Sr. was released from prison. Roger then resumed his role in 2000 and continued as his trainer until 2012, guiding Floyd to become the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
Confirming the sad news, Mayweather expressed, “My uncle was one of the most significant individuals in my life, both inside and outside of the ring.”
“Roger was not only a great champion but also one of the finest trainers in the boxing world. Sadly, his health had been deteriorating for several years, and now he can finally rest in peace.
“Roger meant everything to me, my father Floyd Sr., my uncle Jeff, our entire family, everyone in and around the Mayweather Boxing Gym, and the global boxing community. His loss is truly devastating for all of us.”
Mayweather Sr., also known as the Black Mamba, achieved victory in 59 out of his 72 professional fights, including notable bouts against Julio Cesar Chavez and Pernell Whitaker. He held the WBA and lineal super-featherweight titles from 1983 to 1984, and the WBC light welterweight title from 1987 to 1989.
Further adding to his grief, Floyd Mayweather is mourning the recent passing of his ex-girlfriend and the mother of his three children, Josie Harris, who was tragically discovered deceased outside her Los Angeles residence last week.
